Romancing Saga 2: Revenge of the Seven, an excellent JRPG remake! Another amazing addition to Kawazu's catalogue!

Romancing Saga 2 for the Super Famicom is one of those classic games that you always hear about from time to time. An underlooked gem that had amazing systems and a wonderful score, but somehow never made it to the west. While the game did eventually get a remaster for modern consoles, time had run it's course, and the sensibilities of people had changed. What was once innovative had become clunky and outdated in the eyes of many.

This remake aims to challenge that idea. Not only is Revenge of the Seven an extremely faithful remake, it is also a game that serves as a perfect onboarding ramp for the SaGa franchise. The game gives the player the modern "quality of life" changes that are expected of an RPG in the 2020s (with the option to turn them off, of course), while also retaining the mystery and expansive world that made the original a hit.

The music is given wonderful orchestral arrangements, the battle system is masterfully updated to provide more strategy, and the story has even recieved some updates. If anything would be a downside for this game, it would be the story. The updates it has recieved are wonderful, but may prime a player to expect a more fleshed out story, when the game is genuinely straightforwardly about defeating the titular seven heroes.

This may have been the best JRPG of last year, by my reckoning, and I would highly recommend it to any fans of RPGs, and definitely to anyone who has tried previous SaGa games and bounced off of them. You may be surprised by what a treat this game is, especially considering its lower-than-standard price point.
